Miami, Florida has been a popular winter tourist destination for decades. However, Miami is also a fabulous place all year long, especially in the summer months. What can you do in Miami over the summer? Let’s find out.
Go to the Beach
Miami has an endless ocean coastline and numerous public beaches. Public beaches are free, although there may be paid parking lots. Beaches with public access include Haulover Beach, Bill Baggs, Lummus Park, and of course, North Beach. Be sure to bring sunglasses.
Go to a Pool
If the beach is not your style, Miami has lots of public pools. The Miami area hosts the McDonald Water Park, with a wave pool, and the art-deco Flamingo Park Pool. The huge Venetian Pool was built in 1923 from an old coral rock quarry; the Venetian Pool holds more than 800,000 gallons and features waterfalls and cave-like grottos.
Visit a Museum
A museum can provide an interesting refuge if you’d like to get out of the summer sun. Surprisingly, Miami is home to many museums. If you time your visit just right, admission can be free. For example, the Perez Art Museum Miami is free the first Thursday and second Saturday of the month.
Take a Boat Tour
You can take a boat tour of the Venetian Islands and Biscayne Bay; take in Miami’s natural beauty, as well as scope out the beach homes of the rich and famous. You can also take a fascinating glass-bottom boat tour of the Pennekamp Coral Reef.
Go to the Zoo
Zoo Miami’s 340 acres are home to over 3,000 animals and more than 1,200 plants from all over the world. You can feed a rhino, ride a camel, interact with the zookeepers and lots more. The zoo also hosts a summer camp for kids.
Visit the Seaquarium
The Miami Seaquarium spans 38 acres on a beautiful tropical island. You can swim with the dolphins or seals at the Seaquarium, or pet a penguin. The Seaquarium is also dedicated to ocean conservation and rehabilitates injured endangered sea turtles and manatees.
Eat Out
Miami cooks up delicious food, morning, noon, and night. You can find everything from pricey, internationally renowned four-star restaurants to deliciously inexpensive street food. Miami also has an international flair, with Cuban, Creole and Caribbean cuisine taking the center of attention.
Nightlife in Miami
Miami has a very active nightclub scene, from the throbbing beats of Latin and mega dance clubs to smaller, more intimate lounges. Some are poolside, some even have a bowling alley. Summer fun is a 24/7 affair in beautiful Miami.
